Are you looking for local residential electricians to help you with flickering lights in your home? Flickering lights can be very frustrating and worrisome because the cause can be hard to pin down. In addition, flickering lights can be a sign of a bigger safety issue. There are a few things that you can do to see if the issue is due to a faulty lamp or bad light bulb, though we never recommend taking bigger issues into your own hands.
Flickering Lights a Problem? Our Local Residential Electricians Explain the Potential Causes.
While flickering lights are typically a sign of a bigger issue, such as faulty wiring, power overload on an electrical circuit, or even dangerous power surges, there are a few smaller issues that could be causing the problem. These issues might include loose light bulbs, old power strips, or a lamp’s wire needing to be replaced.
I’m Dealing with a Single Light Flickering
If you only have one light in your home flickering, the bulb may be to blame. If the bulb is older, it may be time to replace it. Additionally, some fluorescent bulbs can appear to flicker at times but if the bulb is constantly flickering it’s time to try a new one. If you recently replaced the bulb try tightening it in its socket, sometimes a loose bulb can be the cause of flickering.
Damaged Cord or Dated Light Switch
If your light flickers when you move the lamp’s cord you have successfully identified your problem. Sometimes older lamps require new cords or plugs in order to work properly. It is never safe to use a lamp with a cord that has tape on it, if this is the case we suggest replacing the entire cord.
Sometimes older dimmer switches aren’t compatible with newer LED bulbs. If you have switched to LED lights but are still using an old dimmer switch the best option would be to have an electrician replace your dimmer so that it works properly.
Flickering Lights that Won’t Stop
When you see multiple lights flickering in your home constantly, there is more than likely an issue with the wiring. There could be loose wires or damaged wiring that needs repairing or replacement. If the lights flicker, or dim, when you start to use appliances or turn on other lights in the house, power surges may be the cause. Power surges are a larger problem and can be unsafe, this type of issue requires professional assistance.
